University of Qld Research into Use of Probiotics in Poultry

Scientists at the University of Queensland are looking into the use of probiotics in meat chickens to increase feed efficiency. The research originally focused on the use of probiotics in ruminants but has since expanded to include poultry. Results of the study have so far been promising with scientists seeing improvements in feed conversion efficiency and growth rate when the probiotic is added to diets at a recommended level. An additional benefit probiotics relates to the public perception. The use of probiotics is a good way to demonstrate to the public that what the industry does is not unnatural; probiotics are good for humans, they’re good for birds as well. The research is set to be completed within the next 2 years with a shelf product to be available not long after. You can view the Landline story here.
