Caring for the Environment
A National Environmental Management System (EMS) for the Meat Chicken Industry has been developed and is being implemented to ensure meat chicken farms minimise their environmental impact (on land, surface water, groundwater, the community and air) while ensuring growers remain economically viable.
Meat chicken growers are developing and implementing environmental management systems for their farms through the EMS Pathways project.
This project is being rolled out nationally with support from the Australian Government through the National Heritage Trust and the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation. It has involved the development of EMS documentation, including a Trainer’s Manual; Participant’s Manual; sample EMS plan, and an EMS workbook. Trainers, who will deliver the program to growers, have been identified and trained.
Growers participate in an introductory workshop which outlines the principles of EMS and how and EMS for individual farms is developed. Each grower then develops an EMS for his farm, and this is followed up by an auditing process.
Outcomes of the project will include the adoption of profitable and sustainable farming practices; improved natural resource management and environmental outcomes; and an ability to demonstrate environmental stewardship to domestic and international markets.
